We moved to Canada’s Arctic in 2016 and it has been an amazing experience for me and my family, Cultural / traditions and storytelling, a vast array of scenery, and short hikes. Our Community
The town at the top of the world is the Northwest Territories’ first planned community. Inuvik was conceived in 1953 as a replacement administrative centre for the hamlet of Aklavik on the west of the Mackenzie Delta, as the latter was prone to flooding and had no room for expansion.
Its name translates to “Place of Man.” Whether you are looking for northern arts and culture, remote rivers and wilderness, a chance to see Arctic wildlife, or just a place to relax and enjoy the midnight sun – this is your destination!
Getting Around
Getting around is not an issue and one can walk pretty much everywhere in Inuvik. One can rent a vehicle, boat tour, dog sled rides, snowmobile, or motorcycle tours. Summer, fall, winter, or spring an outdoor adventure land awaits you in and around Inuvik. It’s the perfect place to explore all that the Arctic has to offer.
Hike or snowshoe the Boot Lake Trail, ski the trails at the Ski Club, or experience golfing 24 hours a day under the midnight sun at the Roads End Golf Club!
Fish and explore the mighty Mackenzie River, from boat or ice.
Drive the incredible Dempster Highway, one of Canada’s top must-travel routes, and experience the ice roads that link the communities of the Delta from approximately January to April.
Camp and enjoy our Territorial parks.
Inuvik is also the gateway to an amazing array of National Parks, from mountainous Ivvavik in the Yukon to Aulavik on Banks Island in the high Arctic, and Tuktut Nogait on the western Arctic coast. Please contact Parks Canada – Western Arctic Field Office for more information on National Parks in our area.
